Below you will find pictures of plants common to southeastern michigan, and information about each plant

 

Red Maple

Red Maple

The red maple is a part of a family of common trees (Sugar Maple etc.)It grows to upto 90 feet and can be found almost anywhere. Its didtinctive color distinguishes it from almost any other tree during summer and spring.Its leave hav three sharp teeth and can be viewed at any time on the Canadien flag. The leaves grow upto four inches long. The red leaves are extremely shiny, which gives them a permanantly "watered" look. Bettles and leaf hoppers can alost always be found on the trunck of this tree.

 

Black Spruce

 

Black Spruce

This tree can grow upto 60 feet in length, but only 25 cm in diameters. The leaves are short stiff and four-sided. It is usually found besides rivers, and lakes. As a result, you can find many of these next to Lake Erie. The seed cones hang sideways and are small and purple. These cones can hang fo several years on this tree.

 

 

 

 

Little Bluestem

Little Bluestem

This grass cn be found in dunes, dry praries, and forests. Its clumps of stem are reddish purple. They turn yellow-range as the grass goes to seed. Though this grass is not noticed immedietely, if you try to look for it it is found in almost all parts of Michigan (it's a native prarie grass).

 

 

 

 

 

Blue Vervain

Blue Vervain

This flower is found in damp thickets, shores, and roadsides.It's adaptable to moist soils. It blooms in only summer, but is sometimes visible in spring. It grows fairly quickly and is easily noticed by it's bright purple color. In Michigan, it is always found near beaches, and highways.
