Enjoying the Outdoors

Michigan has a wonderful range of outdoor recreation opportunites, from beaches and lakes to trails and forests.

With four of the five Great Lakes touching Michigan, and many other inland lakes as well, it is no wonder that boating and sailing are major actvites in the region. one of the more active sailing groups in Michigan, is the Detroit Yacht Club. The DYC sponsors various sailing events including the "Gold Cup Races" and "Venetian Week" where boats sail with decorative lights.

During the winter, when many of the inland lakes freeze over, ice fishing and snowmobile use take on a strong presence in Michigan despite their potential hazards.

Off of the water, Michigan has many avid hikers who utilize Michigan's great expanses to their advantge. In addition, mountain biking is a sport that has been increasing in popularity over the years. November also brings about deer hunting season in MI which one of the years biggest events to numerous persons of all ages throughout the state.
